Advanced techniques in snow safety.

A more in-depth look at snow science and winter route selection. Spend 4 days outside in the backcountry learning about snowpack, documentation and forecasting. You will leave this course with a good understanding of how conditions set up, the dynamics of snowpack failures, and how bulletins are created. This is an essential course for anyone serious about travelling in the backcountry in the winter.

Fitness requirement

An adequate level of fitness is required. We will regularly cover 7-10kms per day and gain upwards of 800m.


The field portion of this course will occur in the local Fraser Valley backcountry.


This course will run Monday- Thursday, or 2 weekends in a row. Custom dates can be accommodated. All sessions are in the field, from 9-430 each day.


AST 1 and at least 1 year in the back country. An intermediate to expert level of skiing or snowboarding.
