Event Details


This Crevasse Rescue course prepares you and your team for traveling through glaciated terrain. This course dives into a variety of techniques and scenarios that may arise while out on a glacier. We will cover a wide range of situations, all requiring different procedures and skill sets. You will leave with an understanding of how to build anchors, ascend a line, utilize different hauling systems, and more. We will spend the first day in a snow free area learning about hauling systems, knots, and rescue equipment. The second day will be spent in the backcountry, putting these skills to use. You will leave with a comprehensive knowledge of the following topics:
  • What is a crevasse, and how are they formed?
  • Why are they hazardous?
  • How to build various anchors with the equipment that you have and depending on snow conditions.
  • Hauling systems specific for varying situations and equipment.
  • Crevasse self-rescue techniques.
  • Basic concepts of glacier travel.
  • Tools required for rescues.

Event Details

As a requirement of participation with Ascent Fraser Valley Guides and Mountain School, you will be required to sign a waiver of liability prior to the beginning of the activity.

Day 1 will take place outside (weather dependant) in Chilliwack.

Day 2 will take place in the alpine. Both days will be 8:00- 4:30

  • Waterproof gloves
  • Waterproof Jacket, Pants, Base layers
  • Headlamp (with fresh batteries)
  • 30-40l day pack
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera
  • Crampons
  • Mountaineering Ice Axe
  • Climbing harness/ mountaineering harness
  • Climbing Helmet
  • Prusik cord
    • 6m of 7mm static cord. ( one 5m long  and one 1m long)
    • 3 locking carabiners (or 2 locking with one being a "3 way" locker)
    • 2 non-locking carabiners
  • Well fitted mountaineering boots
  • Shovel

Fitness requirement
Basic level of fitness required. We will be in the snow for 8-10 hours, working, hauling and digging.

The field portion of this course will occur in the local Fraser Valley backcountry.

The classroom training will have to be completed individually via virtual training prior to the course dates. The field days will start at 8am and run until 4:30pm.

No previous mountaineering experience is required.
